The Printed Word: An exhibition celebrating the Bristol print industry, letterpress printing in industry and art.
February 02, 2017
At The Bristol Central Library
The Bristol Set in Print Project has spent 2016 working with retirees from the print industry, researching their stories and connecting them with current practitioners in a series of unique intergenerational skill sharing activities. These have culminated in the printing of a large map, documenting and celebrating a few of the key print houses from our City. Through the production of this hand-printed art, using traditional letterpress techniques, the skills of this ancient craft have been passed into the hands of a new generation of printers. A practice which is in danger of becoming lost, were it not for a scarce few still keeping the spirit of print alive today.
The Library foyer will come alive with the printed word. Displaying a limited edition Triptych print of the work created during the project, a collection of recorded interviews from printers, their memories and stories from the industry.
Upstairs, an exhibition of Letterpress, then and now. Those who worked in the trade are invited to participate by contributing their memories from the industry. Their photos, printed pieces and memorabilia will be displayed alongside a historical addition from the Bristol Central Lending Library.
Running in Tandem to this will be an exhibition of those who are still practicing today, photos and pieces of work from contemporary Bristol printers.

Letterpress Workshop Number 1
May 20, 2016
The first of a series of inter-generational workshops, The idea of these is that they will be a collaboration between an older generation of industry printers and a new generation of students of Letterpress (graphics students, print students etc), and also current practicing letterpress artists who want to improve on their skills and take part in the project. The outcome of these workshops will be to create a large scale map of Bristol, demonstrating where the print houses in Bristol were, around the 1950's.(There were hundreds)The four workshops will be free to participants and a fantastic opportunity to learn an industrial practice which has become a fading craft.
The guys who we are working with are a right laugh and there will be free tea.
